Are Qiyam-ul-Lail and Taraweeh the same? Is it allowed to pray both Taraweeh with Vitr and Qiyam-ul-Lail at the last ten days of Ramadan?

Qayam-ul-Lail—-could be established any night. Not only in the month of Ramadan. Qiyam-ul-Lail, in the mosques, normally starts around 2.30 A.M or so. [For, Allah (SWT) advised in Qura’an for the latter part of the night] (One may, however, continue praying/worshiping/doing Zikr, etc, after the Taraweeh to get the reward of both).

SUNNAH: Aisha (R.A) reported: With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, The Prophet used to tighten his waist belt (for the night prayers) and used to pray the whole night, and used to keep his family members also awake busy praying. [BUKHARI]

Tahjjud: [Another name for Qayam-ul-Lail] may also be offered following the same “Vitar” rule mentioned hereinbelow.

Vitr however, either should not be offered after Taraweeh and offered at the end of the Qayam-ul-Lail. If offered after Taraweeh then should not be repeated after the Qayam-ul-Lail. {Vitr, per hadith, ought not to be repeated but offered only once in a night}.

AHADITH “Make the last of your prayer at night Vitr.” Narrated by al-Bukhari, 998; Muslim, 749. “There should not be two Vitr in one night.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 470; al-Nasaa’i, 1679; Abu Dawood, 1439. Classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 7567.

Taraweeh is a recommended congregational Prayer specific to the month of Ramadan only.
